story

the
miracle
that
led
to
today's
beatification

Archbishop
Fulton
Sheen.

I'm
Gina

and
you're
listening

another
special
edition
of
our
OSV
Newscast.
Our
team
has
been
on
the
ground
in
St.
Louis,
Missouri,
and
that's
where,
earlier
today,
Fulton
Sheen,
the
20th
century
theologian,
evangelizer,
and
Catholic
communications
pioneer
was
declared
blessed
by
order
of
the
Holy
Father.
This
is
an
historic
event
for
the
Catholic
Church
and
in
particular
for
the
Catholic
Church
in
the
U.S.,
but
there's
one
family
that
feels
the
meaning
of
this
special
day
like
no
other.
Bonnie
Engstrom's
son,
James,
was
born
in
2010
without
a
pulse.
And
for
61
minutes,
doctors
struggled
to
revive
him.
Bonnie
had
prayed
for
the
intercession
of
Archbishop
Fulton
Sheen
during
her
pregnancy,
and
she
implored
his
help
then.
And
just
as
the
doctors
were
preparing
to
pronounce
the
newborn
dead,
he
took
a
breath,
and
his
heart
rate
stabilized.
Earlier
this
month,
James
Fulton
Engstrom
turned
16.
He's
a
healthy,
typical
teen
living
in
suburban
Peoria,
the
same
Illinois
city
where
his
patron
was
ordained
to
the
priesthood
and
is
now
entombed.
In
2014,
a
board
of
medical
expert
consultants
to
the
Vatican
approved
his
incredible
recovery
as
a
miracle.
And
in
2019,
Pope
Francis
authorized
attributing
that
miracle
to
the
intercession
of
Archbishop
Sheen.
OSV
News
spoke
with
Bonnie,
who,
along
with
James
and
the
rest
of
her
family,
were
here
in
St.
Louis
for
Archbishop
Sheen's
beatification.
And
I
began
by
asking
Bonnie
when
she'd
first
heard
of
Archbishop
Sheen.
Let's
take
a
listen
to
what
she
had
to
say.

I
I
don't
even
remember.
And
so
I
don't
know
how
old
I
was,
but
I
feel
like
he's
always
kind
of
been
a
presence
in
a
peripheral
sense
in
our
lives.

Bonnie
said
that
even
during
that
dark
hour
when
her
son
had
no
pulse,
she
never
lost
faith.

never
doubted
in
the
goodness
of
God
and
in
the
prayers
of
the
saints.
I
never
doubted
in
that.
I
just
didn't
know
what
the
answer
to
our
prayer
was
going
to
be
and
what
God
was
going
to
do
and
what
that
was
going
to
look
like.
But
I
never,
God
is
generous
and
faithful
and
has
always
been
that.
And
so
I
could
knew
I
could
trust
in
him.

I
asked
Bonnie
what
she'd
say
to
those
who
are
facing
hard
times
and
struggling
with
their
faith.

I
think
first
I
would
tell
them
that
they
need
to
tell
God
that
God
can
handle
whatever
emotion
that
they
have.
And
I
think
that
I
would
also
encourage
them
to
find
if
it's
Bishop
Sheen
or
whoever,
um,
to
ask
them
to
pray
for
them.
Um
and
I
would
also
encourage
them
to
follow
in
Bishop
Sheen's
footsteps
and
make
a
holy
hour,
even
if
it's
a
holy
five
minutes,
really.
But
I
think
any
time
spent
in
the
presence
of
our
Eucharistic
Lord
is
a
blessing
and
it's
going
to
make
an
impact
on
your
heart.

Sheen

her

this
long
journey
that
brought
them
all
to
the
day
of
his
beatification.
