Pope Leo XIV is turning his attention to a challenge nearly everyone faces daily: the endless competition for our focus in a world of clickbait and digital noise. The Vatican announced that a new gaze paying attention in the age of clickbait will be the theme for World Communications Day 2027, to be celebrated on May 9th. The Vatican's Dicastery for Communications explained that the attention economy, with its struggle for a few moments of interest amid an endless flow of content, is reshaping not just our cognitive abilities, but the depth of our relationships. The lack of genuine attention, fueled by digital culture, has accustomed us to a routine of rapid reactions, to superficial relationships, and to the ease with which we label and reject others, the Dicastery said. But attention, it noted, is actually a precious form of generosity. Its Latin root meaning to reach out toward the other and toward truth. Communicating is not about capturing attention nor about selling it, the statement continued, but about safeguarding it as a precious resource for relationships. Bishop Kevin Rhodes of Fort Wayne South Bend celebrated the Friday evening Mass, after which worshippers processed to the campus statue of the Sacred Heart, where the bishop and university leaders offered a prayer of consecration, asking for healing of divisions and the grace to love others with the selfless love of Christ. In his homily, Bishop Rhodes reflected that the human heart longs for a lasting joy found only in God, and that human sinfulness often obscures the search for truth and meaning. Through the incarnation, he said, God responded by sending his son to love us with a human heart. The devotion runs deep at Notre Dame. Congregation of Holy Cross founder, Blessed Basil Moreau, named the Sacred Heart patron of the congregation in 1841, a year before sending Father Edward Soren to establish the university, whose basilica was dedicated to the Sacred Heart in 1888. The nation's largest annual pro-life demonstration has settled on its message for next year's March, a direct appeal to conviction amid a shifting cultural landscape. The March for Life Education and Defense Fund announced today that the 2027 theme will be The Truth is Pro-Life. Hayden Sledge, Chief of Staff at March for Life, told reporters, the soil is prime for us to make the case for the truth for life, describing how people of different ages, backgrounds, and faiths gather each January in Washington around the shared conviction that every human life has worth. During the second Trump administration, President Trump has sent video messages to the rally while Vice President J.D. Vance has appeared in person. Asked whether officials are expected at the January 22nd event, Sledge noted enthusiasm about the vice president's past appearances and his family's recent addition, adding updates would follow. The 2027 March comes as the movement faces ongoing battles, including preserving the Hyde Amendment and confronting a new generic abortion drug now distributed by mail. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued Bon Sikor's Mercy Health and its subsidiary, Mercy Health Physicians Youngstown, last week, claiming the system subjected Dr. Ian Walton, an orthopedic surgeon, to unfavorable terms and conditions of employment before firing him because of his religion and race. According to the EEOC, Walton had a successful practice with Mercy for many years, but faced antisemitism in the workplace even before October 7th. The lawsuit states Mercy Health told him in November 2023 he was being terminated for quote no reason, then replaced him with a non-Jewish physician. The EEOC is seeking a jury trial. In a statement to OSV News, a Bon Secor's Mercy Health spokesperson said, as a Catholic ministry, our mission and values guide everything we do. We welcome individuals of all faiths and backgrounds. Just days after Archbishop Fulton Sheen's beatification, a new icon unveiled in Peoria is highlighting a lesser known dimension of his legacy, his deep connection to the Eastern Catholic churches, particularly those enduring persecution. The icon reflects Sheen's biritual status, depicting him wearing both a Roman bishop's mitre and a Byzantine episcopal crown, and shows him holding chalk with his familiar message written on a chalkboard. In these troubled times, we must become saints. The icon was enthroned during a divine liturgy following seven Thanksgiving Masses for Sheen's beatification at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Peoria. Bishop Pipta of the Ruthenian Eparchy of Parma reflected that asking what Sheen would think about today's challenges misses the point entirely because Sheen remains spiritually present with believers, praying, suffering, and hoping alongside them, fully aware of contemporary struggles. Bishop Pipta emphasized that Sheen's lifelong dedication to pastoral care and missionary work continues even now through his heavenly intercession. And that's your OSV Newscast for today.
